Organic Chemistry Flashcards
Name the first 10 alkanes
- Methane (CH4)
- Ethane (C2H6)
- Propane (C3H8)
- Butane (C4H10)
- Pentane (C5H12)
- Hexane (C6H14)
- Heptane (C7H16)
- Octane (C8H18)
- Nonane (C9H20)
- Decane (C10H22)
What is the general formula for Alkanes
CnH2n+2
What is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A saturated hydrocarbon is a molecule with only hydrogen and carbon, with no double bonds.
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
What do alkenes contain that alkanes don’t?
A carbon carbon double bond
What do alkynes contain?
A carbon carbon triple bond
What do arenes contain?
A benzene ring (aromatic)
What is an aliphatic molecule?
A molecule with no benzene ring
What are the different types of formulae you can have for alkanes
- Molecular actual number of each type of atom in the molecules
- empirical simplest ratio of every type of atom
- full structural formula show all atoms and bonds
- abbreviated structural formula e.g CH3CH2CH2CH3
- shape and bond angles
- skeletal formula
How do you name an alkane?
- Find the longest chain
- Include any branches
CH3 = methyl
CH3CH2 = ethyl
CH3CH2CH2 = propyl ect… - Count from the smallest number up
What is a cycloalkane?
Contains a benzene ring and have general formula CnH2n
What states are alkanes in?
small (up to 4C) = colourless gases
medium (5-16C) = colourless liquids
large (16C and above) = white waxy solids
What is an alkene?
An unsaturated hydrocarbon with a carbon carbon double bond which determines how the whole molecule reacts (functional group)
