organic chemistry Flashcards
homologous series
have similar chemical properties as they share same functional group
how petroleum is separated
Petroleum is heats into a vapour in the furnace. The vapour is passed into the fractionating colun. The hot vapour cools and condenses as it rises up the column. Lighter fractions with lower boiling points are collected at the top of the column while heavier fractions with higher boiling point are collected at the bottom of the column
fractions of petroleum and their uses (up to down)
petroleum gas - fuel for domestic use such as cooking
petrol - fuel for cars
naptha - feedstock for chemical industries
kerosene - fuel for aircraft engine / cooking
diesel oil - fuel for heavy vehicles
lubricating oil - fuel for lubricating machine parts such as making waxes
bitumen - for road surfaces
