Organic chemistry 1 Flashcards
Why carbon atoms can bond with many elements
It has 4 valence electrons and can make up to 4 covalent bonds with itself or many other elements in a single, double, or triple.
What is functional group?
A functional group is a part of larger molecule. It is an atom or a group of atoms that have characteristic chemical behavior. Compounds with the same functional group often have similar chemical behavior.
Hydrocarbons? two categories?
compounds that are composed of only carbon and hydrogen atoms.
aliphatic hydrocarbon: arranged in straight chains branched (non-aromatic ring) structures. can be found in alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.
aromatic compounds: arranged in ring structures with delocalized pi electrons. essentially cyclic structures. planar structures. Have a pleasant odor. All are unsaturated.

molecular formula
simply counts the numbers of each sort of atom present in the molecule, but tells you nothing about the bonding in the molecule.
Condensed Formula
The condensed formula of a moleculeis the formula where the symbols of atoms are listed in order as they appear in the molecule’s structure with bond dashes omitted or limited. While vertical bonds are always omitted, sometimes horizontal bonds are included to indicate polyatomic groups. Parentheses in a condensed formula indicate the polyatomic group is attached to the central atom to the right of the parentheses.
Skeletal Formula
all the hydrogen atoms are removed from carbon chains, leaving just a carbon skeleton with functional groups attached to it
