Organic Chem and Functional Groups Flashcards
Organic Chemistry?
Chemistry of Compounds that contain carbon
Carbon?
Element #6, Group 4A with 4 valence electrons
Hydrocarbon?
Just a compound made up of hydrogens and carbons
Tetrahedral Arrangement?
Arrangement of four hydrogens around one carbon. Electrons between the hydrogens will repel eachother and will push them far apart.
Expanded structural formula versus condensed structural formula?
Expanded structural formula explicitly shows the bonds of the carbon and hydrogen (eg). Condensed only shows the bonds between the carbons but lists the hydrogens.
Alkanes?
A class of compound that doesn’t have anything the functional groups possess. Alkanes are hydrocarbons (C.H) and are made of single bonds.
Alkane naming?
ends with “ane” and has a prefix based on the number of carbons.
1C prefix?
meth (e.g. methyl group CH3)
2C prefix?
eth (e.g. ethyl group)
3C prefix?
prop (propyl)
4C prefix?
but (e.g. butane) (butyl)
5C prefix?
pent (pentyl group) pentane
6C prefix?
hex (hexyl group) hexane
7C prefix?
hept (heptyl group) heptane
8C prefix?
oct (octyl group) octane
