Organic Analysis -IR Spectroscopy Flashcards
What 4 things could happen when molecules are exposed to IR radiation?
. Electrons can change energy levels.
. Bonds can change the way they vibrate. (Up or down)
. Molecules can rotate or change direction.
. They can move from one place to another.
Define IR spectroscopy.
The change that occurs as the bonds in the molecule vibrate.
How do we get an IR spectrum?
. The vibration of the bonds in the molecule are quantised.
. Each bond required a different amount of energy.
State the equation for wavenumbers.
1/lambda
Why do we use wavenumbers?
The environment will change the energy needed slightly.
How big are polar groups’ absorptions?
Intense. (Therefore, they are long and fat).
What is the region called that’s below 1500cm^-1?
Fingerprint region.
