Organic Flashcards
questions on year 2 organic chemistry
What are 2 major classes of organic chemicals?
Aliphatic: Straight or branched chain organic substances.
Aromatic/arene: Includes one or more ring of six carbon atoms with delocalised bonding.
Benzene structure
1) What is the molecular formula of benzene?
2) Describe the structure of benzene.
3) Describe the orbitals involved, position and name.
1) C6H6
2) 6 carbon atoms in a hexagonal ring with one H atom bonded to each C atom.
3) 6 p orbitals are delocalised in a ring structure above and below the plane of the carbon atoms.
What is the carbon to carbon bonds like in a benzene ring?
The carbon to carbon bonds are the same and have a length between c-c Single bond and c=c double bond. It is a planar molecule.
Describe the electron arrangement in the benzene ring.
The six electrons in the pi bonds are delocalized and spread out over
the whole ring. Delocalized means not attached to a particular atom.
What is the H-C-C Bond angle in benzene?
120˚
The thermodynamics of benzene. What do you know about the enthalpy change of benzene compared to hexene to hexane? Can you draw an enthalpy diagram to show this?
