Organic Flashcards
Distillation process
Is used to separate organic molecules but evaporating and condensation molecules based on there boiling points. Has a lower boiling point so will vaporise when heated and is then fully condensed and collected before turning into a carboxylic acid
Reflux
Works by ensuring volatile molecules are contained when the reaction is heated so that alcohol is fully oxidised. It will vaporise and travel upwards the Vapor is condensed then drops back down into reaction mixer to be further oxidised
Hydrolysis
When water splits breaks large organic molecules into smaller organic molecules meaning it’s breaking bonds between them. Acid hydrolysis uses an dilute acid like h2so4 whereas basic hydrolysis would use a dilute base like NaOh. Both require heat under reflux.
Both hydrolysis reactions produce the alcohol glycerol.
Condensation reaction of
Smaller organic molecules fatty acids join together to make a larger organic molecule, with release of a small molecule water for each amide link formed
