Organelles + functions Flashcards
cell membrane
selectively permeable, ctrl what goes in and out of cell
cytoplasm
a jelly-like substance (mainly water) to hold organelles in place
cytoskeleton
threadlike protein structures that give cells shape & move organelles around (esp for animal cells that don’t have a cell wall)
ribosomes
create proteins, located on rough ER and cytoplasm
nucleus
holds genetic material, protected by nuclear membrane w pores to ctrl what goes in and out
rough ER
has ribosomes on edge, makes + packages proteins
smooth ER
hugs rough ER, detoxifies, makes lipids
golgi apparatus
folded membrane; gets vesicles on proteins + processes, sorts, and ships proteins where needed
golgi apparatus
folded membrane; gets vesicles on proteins + processes, sorts, and ships proteins where needed
mitochondria
cellular respiration; glucose & oxygen—> release energy as ATP energy
chloroplast
light—> glucose by photosynthesis
ONLY IN PLANT CELLS!!
vacuoles
animal cells: multiple small vacuoles in the cytoplasm, storage of materials
plant cells: one large vacuole, storage of materials
cell wall
extra outer cell to provide structure
ONLY IN PLANT CELLS!!!
lysosomes
contains enzymes that break down dead stuff, can self-destruct (apoptosis)
