Organelles Flashcards
Ribosome
Makes proteins
Cell membrane
It surrounds the outside of the cell and controls what materials enter and exit the cell.
Cell
The basic unit of life. It is the basic unit of structure and function.
Organelle
A small structure within a cell that performs a specific job.
Chloroplast
Uses the sun’s energy to make food for the plant cells. This is also the site of photosynthesis
Nucleus
The “brain” of the cell and controls all cell functions. It contains the cell’s DNA.
Smooth ER
This organelle does not have ribosomes attached to it. It helps to make fats.
Rough ER
This organelle has ribosomes attached to it. It transports materials through the cell. It helps to make proteins.
Vacuole
Stores food, water, or waste.
Golgi body
This organelle sorts, packs, and ships proteins. This is known as the post office of the cell.
Lysosome
The organelle that digests old organelles and breaks down large food particles. Sometimes called the “Garbage Collector.”
Cytoplasm
Cell fluid; the jellylike liquid that fills the cell.
Nucleolus
The location inside the nucleus where ribosomes are made.
Cell wall
The rigid or inflexible boundary found in plant cells. It is made of cellulose and provides support and structure to the cell.
Mitochondria
Breaks down food for energy. It is called the “Powerhouse” of the cell.
