Q

Cell wall

A

Found primarily in plant cells and is a rigid structure found outside the membrane.

Is made of cellulose.

Provides structural support, protections, and also acts as a filtering mechanism.

Q

Cytoplasm

A

A jelly like substance
The material between the cell’s nucleus and the cell membrane
It fills the entire cell
It contains a large variety of organelles and nutrients
It stores nutrients

Q

Nuclear envelope

A

Also called nuclear membrane, found in both plant and animal cells.
Protects genetic material (DNA)
Protects the cell’s genetic material from the chemical reactions that take place outside the nucleus.
Contains many proteins that are used in organizing DNA and regulating genes

Q

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)

A

In charge of manufacturing and packaging proteins
Works closely with the Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, and mRNA and tRNA
Many roles in the cell’s ER including calcium storage, protein synthesis and lipid metabolism

Q

Ribosome

A

Synthesizes proteins or protein builders

Can be found floating within the cytoplasm or attached to the ER

Q

Chloroplast

A

Captures the Sun’s energy and is the site where photosynthesis takes place. Which provides energy for growth, development, and repair.

Q

Golgi Bodies ( Also called Golgi apparatus)

A

Modifies proteins and lipids
Process materials to be removed from the cell
Make secrete mucus
Packages products into vesicles for transport

Q

Mitochondria

A

Provides the energy for the cell. “Power House “ of the cell.

17
Q

Function of Vacuoles

A

It’s the storage structure in a cell.

It can hold food for later use or waste for removal.

18
Q

Lysosomes

A

Found only in animal cells.
Contains digestive enzymes.
Breaks down excess or worn out cell parts.
May destroy invading viruses and bacteria.
