Organelles Flashcards
1
Q
Cell Membrane
A
- Protective Barrier against external environment
- Allows transportation of materials in and out of the cell
- Is important for cell interaction and communication
2
Q
Cell Wall
A
- Not found in animal cells
- Rigid layer of cellulose
- Functions as protection and structural support
3
Q
Chloroplasts
A
- Found in plant cells
- Contain chlorophyll giving the plant tissues there green colour
- Site of photosynthesis
4
Q
Nucleus
A
- Present in both Plant and Animal cells
- Contains DNA
- Directs all cellular activity
- Surrounded by nuclear envelope which has pores that allow for transport of materials
5
Q
Nucleolus
A
- Located within Nucleus
- Site of Ribosome production
6
Q
Cytoplasms
A
- Gel like substance inside the Cell Membrane supports and protects the cell
- Contains contents of the cell
- Allows for Cytoplasmic streaming
7
Q
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- Network of folded Membrane that extend into cytoplasm from the Nuclear Membrane
- Carries materials throughout the cell
- Two types Smooth ER and Rough ER(contains ribosomes)
8
Q
Ribosomes
A
- Can exist on rough ER or free in the cytoplasm
- Produce proteins and enzymes
9
Q
Golgi Apparatus (or Golgi Body)
A
- Folded sacs of Membrane that look like stacks of pancakes
- Packages, labels and inspect proteins to be transported out of the cell
- Site of lysosome production
10
Q
Mitochondria
A
- Bean shaped organelle with an internal matrix of membranes
- Site of cellular respiration
- Breaks down glucose into; water, carbon dioxide and ATP (energy for cells)
11
Q
Vacuole
A
- Fluid Filled sacs that store; food, water and waste
- Plant Cells have one very large vacuole and a few small ones
- Animal Cells only have small vacuoles
12
Q
Lysosomes
A
- Only found in Animal cells
- Small, round and membrane bound
- Known as suicide sacs because breaks down large cellular molecules into smaller molecules and digest old cell parts
