Organelles Flashcards
Flagellum
Longer whip-like structures used for movement.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesis of proteins (ribosomes attached to it)
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Collection of enzymes that performs specialized tasks (ribosome free)
Nuclear envelope
Allows material to move into and out of the cells nucleus.
Nucleolus
Site where ribosomes are made.
Chromatin
A complex of DNA bound to proteins.
Nucleus
Contains nearly all of the cell’s DNA and with it coded instructions for making proteins and other molecules.
Centrioles
Help to organize cell division.
Cell membrane
Membrane surrounding the cell.
Cytoplasm
Region in the cell except for the nucleus.
Cytoskeleton
Gives cell its shape and plays a role on cell motion.
Golgi apparatus
Collects, packages, and distributes molecules manufactured in the cell.
Lysosome
Breaks down macromolecules, and digests worn-out cell components.
Mitochondrion
Produces a useable form of energy for the cell.
Cilia
Small hair-like structures used for movement or sensing things.
