Organelle functions Flashcards
What are the two broad types of cells?
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
What does the term ‘ultrastructure’ refer to?
The internal structure of cells
What are the membrane-bound compartments in eukaryotic cells called?
Organelles
What surrounds all cells and separates the inside from the surroundings?
Cell surface membrane
What is the function of the cell surface membrane?
Controls the exchange of materials between the internal and external environments
What type of permeability describes the cell membrane?
Partially permeable
What is the diameter of the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane?
Around 10 nm
What is the nucleus and its primary function?
A large organelle that contains genetic material (DNA) and is involved in cell regulation
What structure separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm?
Nuclear envelope
What are nuclear pores used for?
Allow mRNA and ribosomes to travel out of the nucleus and enzymes and signaling molecules to move in
What is the nucleolus responsible for?
Ribosome production
What are the two types of endoplasmic reticulum?
- Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)* Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)
What is the main function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)?
Processes proteins produced on ribosomes
What is the main function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)?
Production of lipids and steroid hormones
What is the Golgi body also known as?
Golgi apparatus or Golgi complex
What is the primary role of the Golgi body?
Modify proteins and package them into vesicles
What is the main function of the mitochondria?
The site of aerobic respiration within eukaryotic cells
What is the structure of mitochondria?
Surrounded by a double membrane with an inner membrane folded to form cristae
What are ribosomes made of?
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and proteins
What type of ribosomes are found in eukaryotic cells?
80S ribosomes (composed of 60S and 40S subunits)
What is the main function of ribosomes?
Site of translation during protein synthesis
What are vesicles used for?
Transport and storage of substances within cells
What do lysosomes contain?
Hydrolytic enzymes
What do hydrolytic enzymes in lysosomes break down?
- Waste materials* Engulfed pathogens* Cell debris
