Organ Systems Flashcards
Is the heart a muscle or an organ?
Both
What two things does the liver do?
It filters the blood, and it regulates cholesterol and sugar.
What are the four chambers of the heart?
The right atrium, the right ventricle, the left atrium, and the left ventricle.
What does exercise do to your heart rate?
Long term it makes the rate slower, short term it gets faster.
What are three structures of the digestive system?
The stomach, the esophagus, and the liver.
What connects the mouth to the stomach?
The esophagus.
What do red blood cells do?
They transport nutrients, bring oxygen to the body, and get carbon dioxide away from the body.
Where does breakdown begin?
In the mouth.
What do you call arteries, capillaries, and veins?
Blood Vessels
What body systems does alcohol affect.
Most of them.
What connects the mouth to the lungs?
The trachea.
Does the amount of surface area affect chemical breakdown?
Yes. More surface area means faster chemical breakdown.
What do you call the system that gets oxygen to the body using red blood cells?
The cardiovascular system.
What system gets nutrients from and breaks down food?
The digestive system.
What system helps the body move?
The musculoskeletal system.
What are the tiny projections in the small intestine that absorb nutrients called?
Villi.
What system is the brain part of?
The nervous system.
How many lungs are there?
Two.
What are blood thinners used for?
They are used to help blood flow, even if there are blood clots.
What is mechanical breakdown?
It is when something is manually broken down by movement, heat, or pressure. This does not change chemical composition.
What does BPM mean?
Beats Per Minute
What direction does blood in veins go?
It goes to the heart.
What direction does blood in arteries go?
It goes away from the heart.
