Living donor
Living donor are those who have decided to donate organs while they are still alive.
Directed donation
A person makes a donation to someone they know, this could be a family member or friend.
Paired/pooled donation
This is a sharing scheme that enables kidneys to be ‘exchanged’ with other pairs in a similar situation.
Living donor wait time
3-6 months
Deceased donor wait time
2-3 years
Issue with directed donation
The donor is not always a suitable match for the patient they wish to help.
Altruistic
When someone donates their organ to someone they do not know.
Directed altruistic donation
When a donor offers their organ to a specific person they don’t know but may have read about in the news or heard about on social media.
Non-directed altruistic donation
When a donation is made to a complete stranger.
