org in the human body Flashcards
What is a structural grouping of tissues that perform a specific function of functions called?
Organelles
What is a collection of similar cells which are grouped together to perform specialized functions called?
Tissue
What is the basic unit of living matter, the building block which the body is constructed called?
cell
What is a group of organs that work together to carry out a particular task called?
System
What is the function of Glial cells in the Nervous Tissue?
vital for several mental processes:
- memory formation
- central role in brain injury and disease
- implicated in neurodevelopment disorders like autism and schizophrenia
What are the four types of tissue ?
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
What are the two most diverse tissues which are classified according to structure?
- Epithelial tissue
2. Connective tissue
Name some features of Epithelial Tissue.
- it forms a lining layer on the outer and inner surfaces of organs.
- Epithelial cells often grow and divide rapidly
- They lack a blood supply-nutrients and o2 diffuse from the underlying tissue.
Which tissue contains fibres within the matrix which compromise of collagen and elastin?
Connective Tissue- C and E
What is the purpose of collagen?
It is a protein whose structure provides strength and flexibility e.g. A tendon
What is the purpose of Elastin?
It is a protein with a different structure that allows for distortion and then restoration of a structures original shape. Elastin fibres allow the walls of a blood vessel to expand and recoil as blood passes.
What are the major cell types that are found in most connective tissues?
- Fibroblast- secrete extracellular fibres
- Mast cells- secrete histamine
- Macrophages- Engulf phagocytose, ageing cells, damaged cells and cancer cells.
What type of tissue consists of nerve cells and associated supporting cells?
Nervous Tissue
Give examples of nerve tissue.
- Brain
- Spinal cord
- Peripheral NS
What is the function of a neuron?
They are specialized to react to stimuli and to conduct impulses to various organs in the body to bring about a response.
