Order of Operations Questions and Exercise # 1 Flashcards
When you have a mathematical problem (expression) that contains more that one mathematical operation (addition, substraction, multiplication and division) you must solve it following a specific sequence. That sequence is called the _____________________ ?
ORDER OF OPERATIONS
There is an acronym for the Order of Operations. a) What is it? b) What does it mean? and c) How do you follow the process for each acronym part?
a) Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
b) Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply or Divide, Add or Subtract
c) Parenthesis ( Innermost, first), Exponents ( Powers or roots), Multiply or Divide (from LEFT-to-RIGHT), Add or Subtract (from LEFT-to-RIGHT)
What are the steps to solving a mathematical expression using the Oder of Operations?
- First,copy the problem EXACTLY.
- The go through each level of operations (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally)
- Do the operations within each level from left - to - right.
- Bring down the other numbers (be careful not to re-use any).
- Continue until all operations are completed.
