- Royal Blue
draw the royal blue tube tops in the order indicated by the additive
- Royal Blue with RED strip = no additive. Draw after the red tube or SST tubes. Used to measure trace metal within serum.
- Royal Blue with GREEN strip = sodium heparin. Draw after heparin tubes.
- Royal Blue with LAVENDER strip = EDTA. Used to measure trace metal within whole blood.
Additive: EDTA/none
Sample: plasma/serum
Lab: toxicology
Inversions: 8-10
What are the SST tubes?
Gold, Tiger, Red
What are the heparin tubes?
Dark and light green
What are the EDTA tubes?
Lavender, Pink, and Royal Blue with Lavender strip
Describe the order of draw by additive
SPS/culture medium - keep sterile
Sodium Citrate
SST
Lithium Heparin/Sodium Heparin
EDTA
Potassium Oxalate/Sodium Fluoride
ACD
What does the SPS additive do and in what tube?
SPS= sodium polyanthole sulfonate
It is a common anticoagulant and inhibits the activity of the antimicrobial substances in blood, which allows microbes to grow.
The first 2 tubes: aerobic and then anaerobic.
Which tube is sodium citrate in and what does it do?
Acts as an anticoagulant so the sample remains stabe for testing in the light blue tube.
What tubes are SST in and what does it do?
A serum seperator tube which causes blood clotting, and it creates a barrier between serum and blood cells. This allows for easy serum collection after the centrifuge.
Gold, tiger, and red.
What does heparin do and what tubes is it in?
Dark green tube has lithium heparin, and light green has sodium heparin. These are plasma seperation tubes and blood clotting is inhibited/delayed.
Sometimes it goes on ice.
What tubes have EDTA and what does it do?
EDTA prevents blood from clotting by removing calcium (that aids in clotting). used for complete blood counts.
In lavender and pink tubes.
What does potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride do and in what tube is it in?
The grey tube. It is used to preserve the blood sample. Sodium fluoride prevents glycolysis which preserves glucose for glucose tessting.
What tube is ACD in and what does it do?
ACD prevents clotting and is used for hematology or genetic testing. (ABO or Rh typing). The yellow tube.
