Oral Tradition Flashcards
Dr Darrel Bock (memory)
Argues that when there is a memory whereby there is so,etching at stake it will be remembered more accurately 1) eyewitnesses had a stake of the life of Jesus 2) the apostles oversaw the oral tradition.
Lessing
Suggested that there is a common written source between the gospels to account for the obvious similarities.
Deuteronomoy 4:9
Take care: keep careful watch on yourselves so that you do not forget the things you have seen with your own eyes.
W.H.Farmer
The synoptic problem - there is a clear link between the gospels, but which came first?
Dr Darrell Bock (Chinese whisper)
Said that is nothing wrong with the Chinese whisper effect.
Bultmann
We can know nothing of the historical Jesus.
J.G.Von.Herder
Discovered that oral preaching began with oral preaching not the written word.
Kelber
Suggested that folk law oral narratives were subject to change according to the audience, unlike written texts, which were fixed, therefore oral tradition is unreliable.
Wrede
Attempted to show that the historical narratives of Mark were not reliable.
Strauss
Attempted to show that the gospels were altered and were the expression of myth, so cannot be constructed as historical.
Dr Darrell Bock (rote memorisation)
Said that rote memorisation was normal and part of day to day life, they were very good at remembering large bodies of text.
B.H.Steeter
Accepted evidence for the priority of Mark and explained the unique material in Luke and Matthew, by suggesting Luke and Matthew both had different sources as well as Q and Mark.
Griesbach
Argued that Matthew was written by an apostle, therefore he would not have used a non apostolic source - therefore he must have written first.
Gieseler
Suggested that similarities occurred because of the oral tradition.
Dibelius
Believes early Christianity had preserved relatively reliable memories from the earthly ministry of Jesus.
