What is a periosteal elevator used for?
They are used to separate and retract the periosteum from the surface of the down. Before the surgical forceps are placed around the tooth, the dentist uses a periosteal elevator to detach the gingival tissues from around the carving of the tooth
What are straight elevators used for?
They are used to apply leverage against the other to loosen it from the periodontal ligament and ease the extraction. They are also used for removing residual root fragments and removal of the teeth that have been sectioned with a surgical handpiece and bur
What are root tip picks used for?
They are used for the removal of root tips or fragments that may break away fro the tooth during the extraction

They are used to rotate teeth and roots

They are used for to remove the teeth
What is a surgical curette used for?
They are used following the extraction to scrape the interior of the socket to remove diseased tissue or abscesses
What is a rongeur used for?
They are used to trim alveolar bone and are widely used to eliminate sharp projections and to shape the edentulous ridge
What is a bone file used for?
It is used to smooth the surface of the bone after the rongeur has removed most of the undesirable bone
What is a scalpel used for?
It is used to make precise incision into soft tissue with the least amount of trauma to the tissue
What are the parts of the scalpel and what is it pronounced?
They blade used are the 12 and the 15. There are two types of handles, the plastic which are disposable and the stainless steel which can be sterilized. An example of a scalpel would the, 15 blade stainless steel bard Parker scalpel

They are used to grasp and hold things
What is the use of a needle holder?
They are used to grasp the suture needle

They are used to trim soft tissue
What are tissue retractors used for?
They are used to handle soft tissue as carefully as possible to prevent trauma that may delay healing, it helps hold back tissue during a procedure

They are used to hold and retract the cheeks and tongue during a procedure
