Oral Questions Flashcards
What is commonly associated with HIGH pressure?
Good weather, stable air, stationary rain, bad visibility, cirrus/stratus clouds
What is commonly associated with LOW pressure?
Bad weather, unstable air, showery rain, good visibility, cummulus
What direction does HIGH pressure travel?
Clockwise, downward, pushes outward
What direction does LOW pressure travel?
Counterclockwise, upward, pushes inward
What is the lapse rate of temperature?
2° per 1000 feet
What are the 3 stages for thunderstorms?
Cumulus stage, Mature stage, dissipating stage
What is the Cumulus stage of a TS?
Up drafts, build up of storm. Can rise 3000 feet per minute
What is the Mature stage of a TS?
Beginning of rainfall at the surface. Updrafts and downdrafts. Hazardous stage.
What is the Dissipating stage of a TS?
Downdrafts, the emptying of the storm
What is Precipitation Static?
The rubbing of air going up and down within the cumulus and creates static
How far should a pilot stay away from a TS per the FARAIM?
20 NM
What do you need to create a thunderstorm?
Unstable air, moisture, a rising action (unstable lapse rate)
How is lightning produced?
Air molecules rub against each other creating friction static electricity and a positive charge is produced.
What are the three thunderstorm types?
Imbedded, Air Mass, Squall Line
What is an Imbedded storm?
Storms inside a cloud that you can’t see.
What is the most dangerous type of TS?
Imbedded
What is an Air Mass TS?
Least dangerous relatively, burns quickly
What is a Squall Line?
A line of different thunderstorms.
- 100 to 200 miles in length
- Flat lands
- All moving together
- LAND and let it pass
