Oral Pathology Flashcards
Neoplasia (an abnormal process of uncontrollable cell proliferation) is a common synonym for what?
Tumor. Swelling or growth
Suffix “-oma” means tumor, as in “carcinoma”
LIPOma. think oma, think Lipo. (pic in student RDH)
Is this tumor benign? Where is this cell proliferation seen?
Think of the color that fat cells are?
Think of where in the oral cavity there is most fat?
Growth or tumor of fat tissue. It is benign
Not “SA ME CAR” category so not malignant
Yellow in color
usually on buccal mucosa bc fat in cheeks
OSTEoma. Where is this cell growth and is it malignant?
Think of malignant similar to “malicious” if someone is malicious then they are intending to do harm; mean
Tumor of the bone, benign
Rhabdomyoma, where and cancerous?
Rhab, sounds like wrap, think of wrapping.
Your muscles wrap around the bones, this is a tumor of the muscle tissue.
Papilloma, just have to remember this one. A thickened layer of keratin that resembles a common wart. Is it benign?
Cauliflower like appearance.
Ameloblastoma
Think of having a “blast”
Where does this commonly occur?
What can this cause?
blast-> champagne-> think bubbles.
Bubble appearance in bone on radiograph
Bubbles float up, so think of upper part of mandible, the ramus.
Bubbles cause expansion of mandible
Irritation Fibroma
think irritant
ask patient about potential irritants
Usually occurs from cheek biting, resembles Lipoma but is not yellow in color, more of a white appearance.
Melanocytic Nevus
Think Melanin, dark, think coffee dripping from top
Think Nevermind
Dark area, on top, on the hard palate
Nevermind bc its not a big deal, not malignant
Nevus= birthmark or mole on the skin
Melanoma
Think mean, if youre in a bad mood
Irregular moods up and down if mean, so irregular borders.
Malanin, so dark color
SA ME CAR idea
malignant tumors
SArcoma
MElanoma
CARcinoma
AdenOMA, just remember
benign tumor of salivary glands
Sarcoma
Think stars
Malignant tumor of the connective tissue
The stars connect to form the little dipper
Melanoma
Malignant tumor of melanocytes
Carcinoma
Drive your car on the top of roads, dirt, earth’s core
Malignant tumor of epithelial cells
Epithelial is outer layer
What does benign mean?
A benign tumor remains localized and does NOT spread to distant sites
What does Malignant mean?
Think “malicious”, harmful. Invades and destroys surrounding tissue and can spread throughout the body
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
break down the “oma” part and think of key phrases for memorization
Squamous, think square
*one important fact to remember of this as well
*Remember what causes this
Square, canadian flag is square, canadian flag is red and white. Also canadians are very nice people, very soft people.
This appears on the soft parts of the oral cavity (floor of mouth, under the tongue, soft palate, etc.)
red and white lesions
*Most common primary malignancy of the oral cavity
*Alcohol and tobacco consumption
Basal Cell Carcinoma
break down “oma” term
Think of Basil leaf
*One important factor to remember about this specifically
Don’t ever eat basil plain, so don’t put it in your mouth.
Does not appear in the oral cavity
Basil leaf needs a lot of sun to grow, this cancer is caused by sun exposure
*Most common type of skin cancer
Grows in basal cells of epidermis, rolled borders
Osteosarcoma
Which population is most commonly affected by this? Think of development and degeneration of bone with age.
Malignant tumor of bone forming tissue.
Sunburst Pattern may be seen radiographically
Leukoplakia
Think “lake”
Leukocytes are white blood cells, Leuko= white
Lakes are a flat body of water, these lesions are flat, white plaque.
Appears on buccal mucosa, floor of the mouth, lips, ventrolateral surface of the tongue (back side)
-Can range from hyperkeratosis (frictional keratinaztion of tissue) or squamous cell carcinoma
