What is the most common cause of mouth ulcers and do they give an indication of systemic disease?
Recurrent aphthous ulceration, (RAU) these give no sign of systemic disease may be due to stress.
Give an example of physical thing that might give someone mouth ulcers?
Dentures.
What are some risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma?
Tobacco, alcohol consumption and the areca nut.
What will the ulcers look like in someone that has a squamous cell carcinoma in their mouth?
Advanced tumours will cause hard ulcers with raised and rolled edges, easily recongisable.
What are some infective causes of mouth ulcers?
Viral - herpes simplex virus (HSV) and HIV.
Fungal - Candidiasis.
Bacterial -TB and syphilis - only causes a solitary ulcer.
Describe bechets syndrome?
Bechets syndrome is when there is blood vessel inflammation throughout the body, it causes symptoms like mouth ulceration, erythema nodosum, uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eyeball) and genital sores.
Why is recurrent aphthous ulceration and Becheet’s syndrome similar and different?
Both give very similar ulcers but Becheet’s will give you systemic symptoms as well.
How is the mouth an indicator of anemia?
You are able to see mucosa pallor, oral ulceration and there will be disturbed taste.
What are the three types os recurrrent aphthous ulceration?
Minor.
Major.
Herpetiform.
Describe lichen planus and how it affect the mouth?
It is a rash that can affect different parts of the body, in the mouth it can cause white patches on your gums teeth and the inside of your mouth. and burning or stinging in your mouth.
What oral manifestations might you get with lupus erythematosus?
Ulceration.
White patches.
Gives a similar appearance to lichen planus.
Describe Permphigus vulgaris and how it affects the mouth?
It is an autoimmune disease whereby blisters with varying degrees of size break out on the skin and the mouth, more common in Jews and Indians
In most cases oral legions are the first manifestation of the condition with skin lesions coming in about a year later.
Describe Pemphigoid and how it affects the mouth?
It is a rare autoimmune disease that affects the elderly most commonly, it causes painful oral ulceration and it affects the mucous membrane of other organs like the eyes.
What are the four conditions that can cause ulceration in the mouth and they also cause inflammation of the skin?
Pemphigoid and Permphigus (both rare autoimmune conditions).
Lichen planus.
Lupus erythmatosus.
What is the difference between Pemphigoid and pemphigus?
Pemphigoid is more common and is less aggressive and Pemphigoid is also less likely to have legions (but they both have ulceration).
