What visually could the dentist see in an assessment?
Detecting visible abnormalities e.g. size and colour colour changes. Early caries.
What probes are used in an oral health assessment?
Angled probes- used to detect soft tooth surfaces and margins on existing restorations, briault probes- used for interproximal caries and periodontal probes such as who/BPE probes, Williams probes and UNC probes.
In BPE charting what are the measurements and what do they mean?
0) <3.5mm No calculus or overhangs, No bleeding, black banding entirely visible.
1) <3.5mm No calculus or overhangs band entirely visible bleeding on probing.
2) <3.5 Subgingival calculus/ overhangs.
3) 3.5 - 5.5 Black band partially visible meaning pocket of 4-5mm
4) >5.5mm Black band disappears, indicating a pocket of 6mm or more

What are radiographs?
What are photographs?
Radiographs are different types of x-rays used to see various areas of the mouth e.g. Vertical bitewings can show us bone loss and interproximal caries.
Photographs are used in case studies or ortho referrals so other dentist can see progress in either scenario.
What are impression materials?
What is elastomer, what is it used for?
Impression materials are used in surgery everyday but different material are used for different things.
Alginate is used for casting up model for appliances such as dentures and crowns.
Silicone putty is also used for crown to take a more precise impression of margins.
What is full periodontal charting?
Periodontal charting is the process of measuring pockets this means the space between the teeth and the surrounding gums at this time we will also note if the gums are bleeding. These spaces are measured with a Williams or BPE probe.
What is The FDI (federation dentaire international) chart?
The FDI chart is commonly used to number and name the amount of teeth in the mouth. Adult charting is Numbered by quadrants UR is 1 UL is 2 LL is 3 LR is 4. Children’s ( Deciduous charting is also number in quadrants UR is 5 UL is 6 LL is 7 LR is 8.
What dyes are used in an oral health assessment?
Caries dyes can be used in an oral assessment they are used to show plaque left on the teeth.
What is vitality testing?
Vitality testing is used to test the vitality of teeth this can be done by cold testing the tooth - done by using a cotton roll and endo-frost, heat testing the tooth-done by using a gutta percha and a greenstick compound, x-rays- to detect any shadows or percussion- is tapping the tooth with the end of a mirror or probe handle or electric testing with an electric pulp tester.
What is transillumination?
Transillumination is the use of a curing light use on the back of anterior teeth to detect any shadowing in the teeth.
