Oral Final Exam Flashcards
What is monism?
naturalism; that all we are is our physical being
Implications of monism
abortion, euthenasia, weird views of sexuality, human worth or dignity non-existent
What is theistic dualism?
Biblical understanding. We are both material and immaterial
what does theistic monism believe about afterlife?
soul sleep; your spirit stays in your body
what does theistic dualism believe about afterlife?
you can exist outside of your body (biblical)
How can you prove theistic dualism using a statement from scripture?
Matthew 10:28; “fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul…”
Talk about two extremes of gnostic dualism
1) Asceticism= don’t enjoy any pleasures at all, punish the body/flesh as much as possible
2) Hedonism= the body/flesh doesn’t matter, God only cares about the Spirit, and you can do anything you want in your body and it doesn’t affect your spirit
Talk about two extremes in theistic dualism
1) God made our body
Holiness is external/without–how we live in our flesh. Has to glorify God.
2) God made our soul
Holiness is within our human spirit/soul. Also has to glorify God.
Why can we not call God a woman?
The Bible is my definition for all of theology.
What 3 relationships were affected by the fall?
God, others, and ourselves
Explain how the “I, thou,” (relational aspect) of our life was ruined by the fall; how we became an exalted “I” (an ego)
Selfishness. We no longer think of God or others, we only think of ourselves.
Give some examples of how egocentricity is the way that we universally relate to each other in our fallen world today?
Focus is selfishness in those roles. Being arbitrary in execution of ambitions.
(topics: family, dating, practices of business, leadership, etc.)
Sum up the fall in one word
Estrangement (God, others, and ourselves)
Use scripture to refute total depravity
Ephesians 2:8; “For by grace are ye saved through faith …”
Use scripture to disprove unconditional election
Luke 7:50; “Thy faith has saved thee”
