Oral Environment Flashcards
What are preventative materials?
Slow or prevent disease. (Sealants)
What are restorative materials?
Repair or replace damaged tooth (composite filling)
Direct vs indirect restorative materials
Direct-placed on or in the tooth (cements, fillings)
Indirect- fabricated extraorally and placed in mouth (crowns, veneers)
What are auxiliary materials?
Used to fabricate restorations such as stone or dental waxes
What are Biomaterials?
Anything interacting with biological system such as injection of cells for tissue regeneration
What is the primary building block for the hard oral tissues?
Type 1 collagen matrix reinforced by hydroxyapatite
Enamel Composition
By weight: 96% inorganic, 1% organic, 3% water
What does the protein coat of individual crystals provide?
Toughness
What is etch?
Phosphoric acid that preferentially dissolves enamel crystals
Difference between type 1 & 2 etching
1- prism core is preferentially etched
2- prism periphery is etched
Composition of Dentin
Volumetrically: 50% carbonate-rich calcium deficient apatite
30% organic material primarily type 1 collagen
20% fluid, mainly plasma
Primary, secondary and tertiary dentin
Primary-before tooth erupts
Secondary-after tooth erupts
Tertiary-reparative dentin
What are the four classes of dental materials?
Preventative
Restorative
Auxiliary
Biomaterials
What is the DEJ?
Fibril reinforced junction between Dentin and enamel
