Communication according to Wood (2004) is?
a systematic process where individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meanings.
Communication is a PROCESS
a process that changes as the communicator’s environment changes.

SENDER
a person who intends to deliver a message, idea, or information.
ENCODING
putting thoughts, ideas, or information into a symbolic form.
MESSAGE
something that is intended to be communicated.
CHANNEL
the information is transmitted through certain channels, either formal or informal.
DECODING
is the process of interpreting a message sent by the communicator to the receiver.
RECEIVER
the person who receives and interprets the message from the communicator.
FEEDBACK
ensuring that the receiver has received the message and understood it correctly.
MODELS OF COMMUNICATION
systematic representation of the process which helps how communication works.
LINEAR MODEL
- one way communication model
- the message flow in a straight line from sender to receiver
- no concept of feedback
examples:

aristotle’s model
weaver shannon’s model
berlo’s s-m-c-r’s model
TRANSACTIONAL MODEL
- both sender and receiver are the communicators.
- non-verbal feedback gestures: body language can be considered feedback.

INTERACTIVE MODEL
- also known as the convergence model
- mostly used in new media: internet
- people can respond to mass communication: videos
- people can exchange ideas and views
Communication Breakdown
- happens when the message is not sent or received properly
- cause of this is called ‘noise’
PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIER
are called mental barriers
PHYSICAL BARRIERS
the natural or environmental conditions that act as a barrier in communication in sending the message from sender to receiver
PHYSIOLOGICAL BARRIER
bodily conditions that compromise the ability of a person to receive or send messages.
CULTURAL BARRIER
communication problems encountered by people regarding their intrinsic values, beliefs, and traditions in conflict with others
LINGUISTIC BARRIER
refers to conflicts with regard to language and word meanings
