Oral Cavity Flashcards
What are the functions of the digestive system?
Ingestion, mastication, secretion, absorption, elimination of wastes, motility, hormone release, chemical digestion
What lines the oral cavity?
Oral mucosa
What is included in the oral cavity?
Tongue, teeth, minor and major salivary glands, tonsils, and lips
What are the three types of oral mucosa?
Masticatory, lining, and specialized mucosae
Where can we find masticatory mucosa?
Gingiva and hard palate
What is the surface epithelium of masticatory mucosa?
Keratinized or parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium
What is important to note about the surface epithelium of the masticatory mucosa?
Superficial cells of parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium keep their nuclei
What are the two parts of the lamina propria of the masticatory mucosa?
Papillary layer and reticular layer
What makes up the papillary layer of the lamina propria of the masticatory mucosa?
Thick loose connective tissue
What makes up the reticular layer of the lamina propria of the masticatory mucosa?
More dense connective tissue
What can be found in the papillary layer of the lamina propria of the masticatory mucosa?
Blood vessels, nerves, sensory receptors, and some Meissner’s corpuscles
Where can we find lining mucosa?
Soft palate, underside of tongue, floor of mouth, cheeks, and lips
What is the surface epithelium of the lining mucosa?
Nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium
OCCASIONALLY can be parakeratinized stratified squamous
What is the epithelium associated with the vermillion border of the lips (reddish part)?
Keratinized stratified squamous
Which is thicker: areas of nonkeratinized or keratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
Nonkeratininzed
What makes up the lamina propria of the lining mucosa?
Loose connective tissue with blood vessels and nerves
What makes up the submucosa of the lining mucosa?
Dense connective tissue
What can be found in the submucosa of the lining mucosa?
Minor salivary glands, sebaceous glands (mouth corners), larger blood vessels and nerves
Where can the submucosa of the lining mucosa be found?
In most places
Where can specialized mucosa be found?
Dorsal surface of tongue (papillae)
What is the surface epithelium seen on filiform papillae of the specialized mucosa?
Keratinized stratified squamous
What is the surface epithelium seen on all papillae besides filiform of the specialized mucosa?
Stratified squamous
What are the general functions of the specialized mucosa?
Move food
Taste
What is the distribution of thickness seen with the mucosa of the tongue?
Thicker dorsally, thinner and smoother posteriorly
What are the different types of papillae of the tongue?
Filiform, fungiform, foliate, circumvallate (vallate)
Small salivary (von Ebner) glands are associated with what type of papillae?
Vallate
What is the function of the von Ebner glands?
Produce serious fluid to cleanse the taste buds on vallate papillae
On which type of papillae are taste buds ABSENT?
Filiform
What makes up the lamina propria of the tongue?
Loose connective tissue, possible adipose
What is contained in the submucosa of the tongue?
Lingual salivary glands
What is unique about the intrinsic tongue muscles?
No external attachment
What is the intrinsic muscular arrangement of the tongue from dorsal to posterior?
Superior longitudinal muscle
Vertical muscles alternating with transverse muscles
Inferior longitudinal muscle
What is the function of the intrinsic tongue muscles?
Changes shape of tongue which is important for phonation (speaking) and moving food
