Oral Anatomy Terms Units 1 and 2 Flashcards
Alveolar Bone
the bony lining of the socket that holds the root/roots of the tooth and is a portion of the maxillary and mandibular alveolar processes
Anterior
along or towards the front of the dental arch
Apical foramen
the main opening at the apex of a root for the entry and exit of pulp tissue
Arch
the arrangement of the teeth in the form of a curve
Buccal
towards the cheek; the surface of posterior teeth in contact with or facing the cheek
Cementoenamel Junction (CEJ)
the junction of the cementum and the enamel
Cementodentinal Junction (CDJ)
the junction of the cementum and the dentin
Cementum
a hard tissue forming the outer cover of the root of a tooth and surrounding the dentin along the root portion of the tooth
Crown/Anatomical Crown/Clinical Crown
the portion of the tooth from the CEJ to the incisal or occlusal surface that is covered by enamel/the entire area from the CEJ to the incisal or occlusal surface/the visible portion of the tooth
Dentin
the portion of the tooth underlying the enamel and the cementum and surrounding the pulp cavity. Dentin comprises the major bulk of the tooth
Dentinoenamel junction
the junction of the dentin and enamel
Distal
away from the midline of the arch
Enamel
a hard, mineralized tissue forming the outer covering of the anatomical crown of a tooth and surrounding the dentin in the crown portion of a tooth
Facial
preferred term for areas directed towards the face; includs both labial and buccal surfaces
Gingiva
part of the peridontium that consists of mucous tissue and surrounds the tooth at the cervix. It extends to cover the maxillary and mandibular alveolar processes
Incisal
pertaining to the cutting or tearing surface of the anterior teeth
Labial
towards the lips; the surface of anterior teeth directly contacting or facing the lips
Line angle
angle formed by the junction or meeting of two surfaces (naming seems to go in order of surface numbering)
