Optics pt.1 Flashcards
What are the two types of light? Give examples
Natural: sun and organisms
Artificial: combustion and light bulbs (incandescent, sodium vapour, fluorescent)
What is luminescence?
Light that is generated without heat
What is phosphorescence?
Light emitted for some time after ultraviolet radiation has stopped. eg; glow in the dark
What is chemiluminescence?
Light generated by energy released during a chemical reaction. eg; glow sticks
Bioluminescence
Light produced by living organisms. eg; fire flys, jellyfish
What is fluorescence?
Emission of light by a substance that absorbs UV radiation. Molecules go into an excited state then lose their energy in the form of heat and light. eg; highlighter
What is a wave?
A disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another without transferring matter
What is the crest?
The biggest point on the wave
What is the trough?
The lowest point on the wave
What is the amplitude?
The waves height
What is the wavelength?
Distance between one crest to the next
What does frequency mean?
Number of wavelengths per second.
Symbol = y Units = Hz or s1
Short wavelength has..
High frequency
Long wavelength has..
Low frequency
How does light behave?
both as a wave and particle
