Optics Flashcards
light passes from more dense to less dense medium, does the light ray bend towards or away from the normal?
light ray bends away from the normal
light passes from less dense to more dense medium, does the light ray bend towards or away from the normal?
light ray bends towards the normal
What happens when refraction occurs?
Wave speed and wavelength changes, frequency changes the same. Partial reflection always occurs unless total internal refraction
refraction law
- incident, refracted, and normal all lie in one plane
2. ratio of incidence angle/ refraction angle = constant known as refractive index
air to glass refraction: less dense to more dense
glass to air refraction
sin i1 /sin r1= n
sin i2= sinr1 and sinr2=sini2
so sini2/sinr2=1/n
What does the refractive index equal
- sini/sinr
- c (speed of light)/ cs (speed of wave in substance
- wavelength of c / wavelength cs (frequency remain constant)
