optics Flashcards
Law of Reflection (convex)
convex mirrors cause reflected rays to diverge
Law of reflection (concave)
reflected rays converge to a central points

Sources of light, how they’re produced, examples
Incandescence – very high temperatures. ex. candle, lightbulb
Electrical discharge – an electric current is passed through a gas. ex. glass lights, lightning
Fluorescence – UV light is converted to visible light immediately. ex. fluorescent lightbulb
Phosphorescence – absorption of UV light followed by emission of visible light over a period of time. ex. glow in the dark
Chemiluminescence – chemical reaction. ex. glowing bracelets
Bioluminescence – chemical reaction in a living organism. ex. glow bugs
Triboluminescent – from the friction of scratching crystals. ex. life savers, crystals
Light emitting diodes – electric current passes through a semi conductor. ex. indicator light, christmas light.
