Optical storage devices Flashcards
How do optical storage devices store data
on tiny bumps called data dots
Maximum capacity of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
CD-ROM=800mb
DVD-ROM=4.7gb
Uses of CD-ROMs
storing small files like-; music tracks, audiobooks
Uses of DVD-ROMs
storing bigger files like-; movies, computer games, enclyclopedias
Advantages of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
-Hold more data than floppy disks

-data is read only(ROM) so it cant be accidentally erased
-portable
Disadvantages of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
-hold less data than hard disk drives or memory sticks
-cant edit the disks as they are read only
Maximum capacity of CD-R and DVD-R
CD-R=700mb
DVD-R=4.7gb
Uses of CD-R
-create personalised music playlists
-transferring data from one computer to another
Uses of DVD-R
-storing recordings shot on video cameras

-portable
Disadvantages of CD-R and DVD-R
-only recordable once so impossible to update the disk
-if disk is damaged during burning it has to be thrown away
-not all CD/DVD players can read CD-R and DVD-R
Maximum storage capacity of CD-RW and DVD-RW
CD-RW=700mb
DVD-RW=4.7gb
Uses of CD-RW
-making editable playlists
-backing-up computer files
Uses of DVD-RW
-recording tv programmes
-backing-up computer files
Advantages of CD-RW and DVD-RW
-re-usable
-can be updated
-not as wasteful as CD-R
