Blepharitis
Blepharitis causes red, swollen and itchy eyelids.
What is the main cause of blepharitis?
Staphylococcus bacteria
> can also be caused by rosacea
Stye
Small yellowish spot most commonly caused by the blockage of an oil gland at the base of an eyelash.
> painful / tender to touch
Conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by viral of bacterial infection - highly contagious.
> Eye drops and good hygeine.
Pinguecula
Non cancerous growth on the surface of the eye.
Pterygium
Non-cancerous wing shaped growth of tissue across the cornea. Can cause discomfort.
> treated with eye drops / surgery.
Diffuse iris nervus
Benign pigmented growth on the eye.
Abnormal red reflex in a opthalmoscopy exam is commonly due to what?
Cataract
Papilledema
Bilateral swelling of the optic disc due to increased ICP.
Exudates
aka Cotton wool spots - are swollen nerve axons.
Exudates would be seen in what patients?
Hypertensive or diabetic patients.
