LEFT WING- DEMOCRATS

- more socialist policies- e.g. the NLRA
- social security act- washington ordered states to accept this
- huey long- radical proposals, turned against roosevelt and competed for presidency, e.g. ‘share our wealth’ scheme
- mass popularity- coughlin and townsends radio broadcasts were much more popular than Roosevelts
- the second new deal was far more radical, suggesting the influence the left wing had.

RIGHT WING- REPUBLICANS
A
- Took the NIRA to supreme court, which as ordered unconstitutional. JP Morgan and the liberty league criticised the NIRA too
- CCC- right wing business feared loss of business to a less qualified, cheaper workforce
- TVA- argued it was unconstitutional but lost to roosevelt
- republicans slowed the SSA and revenue act- they de- radicalised the supreme court

SUPREME COURT- MOSTLY REPUBLICAN
A
- all but one judge has been appointed by republicans. average age of 71
- declared the NIRA unconstitutional as it prohibited interstate shipments of petrol
- banned the NRA claiming congress had given roosevelt too much power
- banned the AAA- claimed it infringed on individual powers of each state. Sick chicken case!
- invalidated a state law in NY which tried to bring in a minimum wage

ROOSEVELTS ACHIEVEMENTS
A
- on the surface- the main pillars of the new deal held up. he ‘won’
- supreme court did enhance the role of the federal government
- 1933- marches in favour of the NRA by workers and businessmen
- farmers were grateful for the AAA
- roosevelt got rid of the laissez faire ideology. set a new standard
- roosevelt won next election with a sweeping majority. the people loved what he was doing, and the supreme court had to back off. democrats dominated congress too, 77:19
