Oppositeness and dissimilarity of sense Flashcards
Antonymy
A sense relation between 2 or more words belonging to the same lexical field, same parts of speech, but differ in one aspect (e.g. UP-DOWN)
Gradable antonymy
antonyms that belong to a continuous scale of values and are at opposite ends of it. Between them, there are intermediate items. (e.g. COLD - lukewarm - HOT)
Complementary antonymy
Antonyms that come in pairs and if one member is applicable the other is not. (e.g. ALIVE - DEAD)
Relational antonymy
Pairs of antonyms in which one describes a relationship between two objects and the other describes the same relationship but in reverse order. (e.g. PARENT - CHILD)
Taxonomic sisters
Multi-member systems where antonyms are at the same level in a taxonomy. (e.g. DAYS OF THE WEEK, SEASONS, COLOURS)
Derivational antonymy
Based on secondary word formation by adding negative affixes (e.g. FAIR - UNFAIR)
Antipodals, reverses
Members of a pair at an extreme end of a certain scale (e.g. TOP - BOTTOM)
When we want to describe a movement in opposite directions like between two terminal states we use reverses. (e.g. COME-GO; PUSH-PULL)
