Opportunistic Infections Flashcards
Oral moniliasis: thrush
Vaginal moniliasis: _________
vulvovaginitis
Onychomycosis: __________
Paronychomycosis: cuticle infection
nail infection
Laboratory diagnosis of Candida:
- Germ tube
- CHROMagar
hyphae-like extensions of young yeast cells showing parallel sides, are aseptate, and will not constrict at point of origin
(C. albicans, C. dubliniensis)
True germ tube:
hyphae looks like germ tubes but with septate and constricted at point of origin
(all Candida exhibit pseudohyphae except C. globrata)
Pseudogerm tube
uses enzymatic reactions to differentiate Candida spp
CHROMagar
encapsulated yeast (mucoid colonies) cell in bird and bat droppings
Cryptococcus neoformans
Cryptococcus neoformans in Gram stain
demonstrates capsule
Cryptococcus neoformans in India ink
starburst pattern
Laboratory diagnosis of C. neoformans:
- Urease & inositol (+); Nitrate (-)
- Culture: SDA media without cycloheximide
causes respiratory infections in immunocompromised patients, esp. AIDS
Pneumocystis jiroveci
Specimen for Pneumocystis jiroveci
bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
