Q

If a patient is identified as a 2D6 ultra rapid or poor metabolizer, what does that mean for opioid use?

A

If codeine is chosen as the opioid of use, caution must be taken, as ultra rapid metabolizers will convert codeine to morphine more rapidly = possible toxicity in children & breast fed infants. Poor metabolizers will be in pain as the active morphine is not being created
