Ophthalmology Flashcards
What is Glaucoma?
It is increased pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure)
What is the name of the fluid produce in the anterior chamber of the eye?
Aqueous humour
What is the name of the fluid in the posterior chamber of the eye?
Vitreous humour
What does the aqueous humour of the eye do?
It maintains the shape of the eye and nourishes the tissues
Where does the aqueous humour drain in to?
The aqueous humour drains out of the eye in to the blood stream through the drainage angle-a sieve or meshwork like area through which aqueous percolates our of the eye.
What happens to the eye with glaucoma?
The drain becomes partially or completely clogged even though aqueous fluid is still being produced, this causes pressure to build up in the eye.
What can happen is Glaucoma is left untreated?
The increased pressure can cause irreversible blindness in addition to stretching and enlargement of the eye.
How can glaucoma be classified?
As primary or secondary
What is primary glaucoma?
This is genetically predisposed condition where the drainage angle has not formed correctly or at all
What is secondary glaucoma?
Glaucoma caused by another condition which can include bleeding, inflammation, lens luxation
What is sudden acquired retinal degeneration (S.A.R.D)?
Acute loss of vision, usually over several days.
What does the usual appearance of suddenly acquired retinal degeneration?
Usual appearance is dilated pupils with poor response
What diagnostics can be used to diagnose suddenly acquired retinal degeneration?
An ERG electro retinal gram
What is progressive retinal atrophy?
An inherited disease that causes rod cells to die. It occurs in both eyes simultaneously and is not painful
How are you likely to notice an animal with progressive retinal atrophy?
Night blindness
