Operative Dentistry Flashcards
What are three things fluoride does?
- Remineralization of tooth structure
- Decreasing enamel solubility (lowering critical pH)
- Interfering with metabolic activity of cariogenic bacteria
What is the critical pH of Enamel FA?
4.5
What is the critical pH of enamel CHA?
5.5
What is the critical pH of dentin and cementum?
6.2-6.7
What is the shape of pit fissure lesions?
Inverted v-shape
What is the shape of smooth-surface lesions?
v-shaped
Why can root-surface lesions progress rapidly?
No enamel to protect them
Describe infected dentin appearance
Superficial, wet, soft, mushy, necrotic
Describe affected dentin appearance
Deeper, dry, leathery, demineralized but not invaded by bacteria
Describe what occurs after cavitation
An irreversible process that requires restorative treatment
Describe Incipient/Reversible Caries
On smooth surface, appears opaque white when air-dried and seems to disappear when wet
Describe Cavitated/Irreversible Caries
Enamel surface is broken (not intact) and usually the lesion has advanced into dentin
Describe Location of Simple Caries
Covers one surface of a tooth
Describe Location of Compound Caries
Covers two surfaces of a tooth (MO, DO)
Describe Location of Complex Caries
Covers three or more surfaces of a tooth (MOD, MODFL)
