operating systems Flashcards
operating systems
- DOS
- Windows 9x/XP/ME/Vista/7/8/10
- macOS/iOS/watchOS/tvOS
- linux- various distributions
- android- various versions and differences between handset manufacturers
Many Windows based machines have been updated to Windows 10
, there will still be systems that are using older versions of Windows, especially if there have been several machines seized from a crime scene and some of them are older unused machines that have now been replaced but not wiped of their data.
Not everyone uses Windows machines, you could find Apple machines being used as well as Linux based machines.
Even if you have used a couple of each type of operating system so you are familiar it will help you in your role as a digital forensics specialist.
DOS- disk operating system
- No GUI (Graphical User Interface) – everything is done through the command line:
- C:> (this is a command prompt)
- C:>ver (this is a command prompt and the ”ver” part is the command to ask the operating system to tell us what version it is – a bit like asking its name)
- Folders and files were still used in DOS, but you had to type in the commands in order to get to the folder or file you wanted.
- Commands such as:
cd – change directory (folder);
dir – list the contents of the current directory (folder);
format – used to format (wipe) a disk 3.5” floppy disk or a 5.25” floppy disk at the time;
mkdir – make directory (make a new folder)
