Operating systems Flashcards
What is an operating system?
An operating system manages the hardware and softwares for a computer. They make running the computer more ‘user friendly’.
What 5 tasks are operating systems responsible for?
Memory management Storage management Device management Manages security Provides interface
Memory management:
The OS will be responsible for ensuring that programs running have space in the RAM. It also needs to keep track of what memory spaces are allocated to which processes
Storage management:
The OS is responsible for overseeing all saved data to and from secondary storage. Specifically, creating and deleting files and directories so it can be found again at a later date
Device management:
The OS keeps track of all external devices plugged into the computer; such as printers, keyboards and speakers. The OS handles communication between them all.
Manages security:
The OS provides some basic forms of security, normally in relation to direct access to the machine. This typically includes usernames and passwords to login to the computer.
Provides Interface:
The OS provides an interface for the user to use on the computer. This normally, but does not always, mean you will see windows and icons which can be clicked on to navigate programs and files.
