Prepares a file system to be stored.
Format
It records the position of files on the disk using FAT and 32-bit addressing.
FAT32
It uses a journaling system to record changes to the system file and a master file table to record information about each file.
NTFS
Splitting a physical drive into logical drives
Partition
Usually the first partition.
Primary Partition
Uses remaining free space on a hard drive or takes the place of primary partition.
Extended Partition
The partition used by the operating system to boot the computer.
Active Partition
A section of an extended partition that can be used to separate information for administrative purposes.
Logical Drive
A letter assigned to a physical or logical drive.
Drive Mapping
The smallest unit of space used for storing data.
Cluster
One complete circle around a hard drive platter.
Track
A stack of tracks lined up one on top of another to form a cylinder shape.
Cylinder
Used in environments where the same files may to be accessed by multiple versions of window.
FAT32
Can support more and larger files than FAT32, and provides more flexible security features for folders, files and sizes.
NTFS
Can be converted from FAT32 to NTFS using the CONVERT.EXE utility. This will provide extra security advantages of NTFS.
