What is the Internet?
- A huge network that links networks of computers all over the world
- All computers use the the protocol TC/IP to communicate and send data to each other
Website use the intenet to communicate. What protocol allows people to access linked webpags?
HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol)
What does ISP stand for?
Internet Service Provider
What do you need to connect to the internet?
A Network Interface Card (NIC) to get a cable or wifi connection
An Internet Service Provider (ISP) - e.g. BT, Virgin, SKY, Talk Talk
What should you consider when choosing an ISP?
Cost: Monthly payments as well as set-up cost
Bandwidth: Higher bandwidth usually means a higher price.
Download limits: You can be charged extra if you go over the cap
Email and Web space: Most ISPs can provide you email addresses and provide space on their servers for you to create your own website
Security: ISP may provide you a firewall, antivirus and antispam software, and parental controls
Reliability and support: ISPs may lie about bandwidth and may have poor customer care. Check for reviews.
What are the main ways of communicting using the internet?
Email: Sending msgs. Can be accessed on most digital devices
Instant Messaging: Real time “talking” through typing messages. Helps collaboration
Blogs: Shared online diaries where you can post and share experiences.
Social Networking: Websites that allow chat, messaging, email, group and file sharing.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP): Requires fast internet connection. Can add webcam to video chat
Online Albums: Photo albums hosted on a website. Allows the backing up and sharing of photos
If an ISP says that you have ‘unlimited’ monthly usage, what does this mean?
There is no cap on how much you can be downloaded from the internet
If an ISP says that you have 1gb download limit, what does this mean?
You can download 1gb of data before you go over your allowance

Bandwidth. The higher the bandwidth the faster the data can be transferred

Download Limit: Videos use a lot of data, so you must make sure you have a lot of data available to use, or preferably unlimited downloads
Bandwidth: video needs high bandwidth otherwise it will keep pausing and buffering which would ruin the experience of watching the video
A family with young children are looking for an ISP, what should the parents consider when chooising an ISP if they want help keeping their children safe online?
Parental Controls: Because these will help the parents filter out inapprorpite content they do not want their children to see on the internet
