What is a balanced hand
A hand with no void or singleton and no more than one doubleton, or and hand with one of the following shapes:
3334 4432 5332
How many points do you need to open 1NT
12-14
What shape hand do you need to open 1NT
Balanced
What combined points do you and partner need to be in game
(3NT)
25 or more
When responding to partner’s opening bid of 1NT what 2 questions do you ask?
- How many points do I have
2. Am I balanced or unbalanced
How many points do you need to respond to partner’s opening bid of 1NT with an unbalanced hand?
ZERO………
If you are unbalanced you MUST bid your longest suit even with ZERO POINTS
How do you respond to 1NT with 0 - 10 points balanced
PASS
How do you respond to 1NT with 11 - 12 points balanced, what does opener do?
You bid 2NT - invitational……..
Opener bids 3NT with a maximum opening hand 14 points and
passes with 12 or 13 points
How do you respond to 1NT with 13+ points and a balanced hand
Bid 3NT
How do you respond to 1NT with 0 - 10 points unbalanced
Bid your longest suit at the 2 level (Weak take out)
How do you respond to 1NT with 13+ points and a 5 card major
Bid 3 of your major (forcing bid)
How do you respond to 1NT with 12+ points and a 6 card major
Bid 4 - you have found a major fit and have enough points between you for game.
(Remember your partner has no voids or singletons for their opening 1NT bid)
If you open 1NT and partner bids 3H or 3S can you pass
DEFINITELY NOT - it forces you to choose either 4 of their major if you have 3 or more, or 3NT if you only have 2
What is a weak take out - how does opener respond
A suit bid at the 2 level after partner opens 1NT.
Opener ALWAYS PASSES - you do not have to think about it, responder can make a weak take out with ZERO POINTS!
How do you respond to 1NT with a 6+ minor and 13+ points
Depending on your hand choose 3NT unless you have a void or 2 weak suits then consider 5C or 5D
