Divine preparation came through three different cultures. List and explain below how each of the three had an impact on the New Testament.
Jewish, Roman, and Greek culture.
Jewish: Already recorded the Old Testament, the religious climate had major division amongst large parties, and four hundred years of silence paved the way for the NT.
Romans: The Romans created a system of roads and entered a time of peace (Pox Romana).
The Greeks created a world speech (Koine Greek).
List the three categories of the New Testament books
Historical, Epistolary, and Prophetical
Prior to the Old Testament what three cities had the most impact upon Judaism?
Babylon, Alexandria, and Jerusalem
Explain below who the Sadducees were and what they believed
The Sadducees were a political party of the Jewish aristocratic priesthood and not popular among common people. Did not believe in existence of angels, devils, spirits or resurrection of the body or afterlife. Believed man was master of his own identity; persecutors of Jews.
Explain below who the Pharisees were and what they believed
The Pharisees were the religious leaders often identified with the scribes and most influential and popular with people. Believed in immortality of the soul, messianic hope, and divine providence. They were rigid legalists (salvation came through obedience). Believed that Christ would come and establish an earthly kingdom.
Explain what the Sanhedrin was
The Sanhedrin was a Jewish Council of Supreme authority which met in Jerusalem and consisted of Pharisees and Sadducees. Had complete control of religious affairs and supreme authority of interpreting Mosaic Law.
Explain the meaning of the Synoptic Gospels.
Matthew. Mark, and Luke stress the humanity of Christ
