What are the two types of Hazmat responses?
FRO and HIRT
Define a hazmat incident
Any suspected (about to) or actual release of hazardous material. May impact life, environment or property
What is an incidental release?
Release of hazardous material small enough that business can control/neutralize without the need for emergency response
What is an Uncontrolled release?
A release that if not control would pose a threat to life, environment or property
3 types of situations (based on releases) a hazmat call can be that would dictate tactics and commitment?
Incidental release
Suspected or imminent release
Actual uncontrolled release
Incident Priorities on Hazmat incident
-Life (safety/rescue) Perimeter establish/cite control -Environment Containment and control of a release Decontamination -Property Incident Stabilization Assist in disposition of material and site Cause and determination
What are Defensive actions that can be taken at Hazmat incident
- Initial perimeter/site control
- evacuation/shelter in place
- determining the product
- Victim rescue w/n limits
- Emergency Decon
What are offensive actions that can be taken at Hazmat incident by member of HIRT?
- Rescue in the exclusion zone
- Monitoring atmosphere w/n exclusion zone
- containment and control of actual release

What is the biggest question to ask yourself as 1st in engine company that is FRO?
Is there a rescue (rescue or recovery)
Can the rescue be made by a FRO or does this require a HIRT response
Zones on Hazmat call, how are they identified and who establishes them
Exclusion zone- Red tape (HIRT only)
CRZ- Yellow tape (safety personnel w/ PPE)
Support Zone- Yellow tape (ICP)
All zones are established by member of HIRT Team
Who can authorize the re-entry into a business after a hazmat incident?
Environmental Health Rep
What is the Site Safety Plan?
What does it include?
Addresses the safety and health hazards of each phase of the IAP involving Hazmat Operations
It includes the requirements for responder protection
Cost Recovery at a hazmat incident (do more HW)
The IC is responsible for determining if the incident qualifies for cost recovery based on our AP
