Oogenesis Flashcards
Production of ova from the oogonia.
Oogenesis
Where oogenesis occur?
Ovary
Epithelial covering of the ovary consisting of a single layer of squamous to cuboidal cells.
Germinal epithelium
Narrow dense fibrous layer of connective tissue immediately beneath the Germinal epithelium.
Tunica albuginea
Region of the ovary containing the follicles of various stages of development
Cortex
Central region containing blood vessels
Stroma
Nest of cells enclosing the primary oocytes
Folicles
Small follicle consisting the large primary oocyte surrounded by a single layer of flat follicular cells
Primordial follicle
A little larger than the primordial follicle and consists of a primary oocyte surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal cells
Primary follicle
Follicles of various sizes
Growing follicle
The fluid content of antrum secreted by the follicle cells seen as pink coagulum
Liquor folliculi
Very large follicle bulging from the surface of the ovary.
Mature or Graafian follicle
First structure of mature follicle
Primary oocyte
Cell membrane of primary oocyte
Vitelline membrane
Seen as a sky blue layer of connective tissue
Zona pellucida
2 to many layers of cuboidal cells located immediately adjacent to the zona pellucida
Corona radiata
A mound of follicle cells forming a hillock external to the Corona radiata protruding to the antrum
Cumulus oophorus
Space/cavity containing liquor folliculi
Antrum
Thick layer of follicle cells bordering the antrum exclusive of the cumulus oophorus
Stratum granulosum
External limiting membrane of the stratum granulosum
Basement membrane
Two layered envelope enclosing the mature follicle with no definite demarcation.
Theca or capsule
Inner layer of the capsule immediately outside the stratum granulosum consisting of a layer of rounded cells
Theca interna
Outer layer of the capsule made up of spindle-shaped and connective tissue fibers arranged around the ovarian follicle
Theca externa
Temporary structure formed by the ovarian follicle after ovulation
Corpus hemorrhagicum
Formed endocrine organ of corpus hemorrhagicum after ovulation which functions to maintain growing fetus
Corpus luteum
Scar tissue on the surface of the ovary which is a remnant of ovulation.
Corpus albicans
Process of oogenesis
Primordial Germ cell > oogonium > primary oocyte > Secondary oocyte and first polar body > ovum and second polar body
