OOD Exam Flashcards

1
Q
  1. Although you have yet to take the ‘weight’, what are some preparations you would make before taking over the duty?
A
  1. When approaching the Ship for work take note of the state of the upper decks, lines, fenders, flag hoists, shore connections etc, also the state of the wharf and surrounding areas.
Note the dress and bearing of gangway staff, also be aware of oncoming dutywatch (ensure all are aware of their responsibilities).
Check vehicle log, know what movements are necessary – know CO’s movements.
Confirm all paperwork / logs have been signed by offgoing personnel – recall lists up to date.
Be happy with handover details – NFS, engineering state, harbour movements, DC State, shore/ship services, work to be completed by both dutywatch and contractors.

Q
  1. The time is 0740, where are you expected to be at this time?
A
  1. Dutywatch muster at RAS Stn ? each morning, the OOD is to be present. This ensures the dutywatch know who they are reporting to. It is an excellent opportunity to check that they are all aware of their responsibilities in an emergency. Also a good chance to brief DSS on work to be completed / welding sentries etc and general expectations.

Q
  1. At your dutywatch muster, AB Sly tells you her boyfriend is sick and she needs the day off. What is your response? After dealing with her you brief your dutywatch (how many?). What do you include in your brief?
A

AB Sly: Is her boyfriend her recognised NOK? If not she has little recourse for compassionate / careers leave, however if she has organised a replacement who is present then have them sign a change of duty chit and the OOD can approve it – must go through department regulator.
Suggest she call him a few times from work if no leave is approved. Confer with HOD during working week. If the boyfriend is in a critical condition ensure she has arranged an ambulance and appropriate care for him.

Dutywatch Brief: - gangway staff are to remain sharp and alert and wear the same rig

  • work to be completed that day
  • required to provide berthing party to Newcastle at 0900, all are to be in the same rig and on the wharf by 0845, 1 x LS to take charge (FB4 bows south)
  • Admirals barge at 1230, piping party required
  • Expect to refuel during forenoon fuel lighter to be alongside at 0930 – standby pipes
  • Lastly confirm everyone is aware of responsibilities in DC emergencies and rounds requirements.
