ontologicial (philosophy) Flashcards
What is Anslem’s Proslogian 2?
By definition, God is greatest
To be the greatest, God must be in re, not in intellectu
What is Anselm’s Proslogian 3?
God is a necessary existence
A necessary existence is greater than a contingent one
Therefore, by definition, as existence is necessary, God’s existence is necessary
What is the painter analogy?
A painter has an idea (in intellectu)
The painter paints the idea (in re and intellectu)
Painting in reality is greater
What is Guanilo’s criticism?
It is illogical: justifies the existence of anything
PERFECT ISLAND: imagine an island with anything on it
According to Anselm, it would now exist, as it would be the greatest thing you can imagine
What is the criticism of Guanilo’s argument?
He uses contingent examples when God is necessary
What does Descartes say about the idea of God?
It’s innate
God is perfect, and so God’s existence is a predicate as perfection is an inherent quality –> analytic
What is Kant’s criticism of Descartes argument?
Existence is NOT a predicate, as that would imply that information about nature is told, which it is not
Therefore: not analytical, requires evidence
What is Malcolm’s criticism?
Proslogian 2: God is unlimited, so he must be necessary
Either impossible or necessary
As there is evidence for God’s existence, must accept that God exists
What did Descartes believe?
In his own existence, but nothing else: no empirical evidence
What does inductive mean?
Draw a general conclusion from specific obversations: persuade
What does a priori mean?
Does not depend on empirical evidence: logic ONLY
